{Day 5} Cleaning Our Minds Through Fasting From Media

5 days series

Do you have a hunger for God? If we don’t feel strong desires for the manifestation of the glory of God, it is not because we have drunk deeply and are satisfied. It is because we have nibbled so long at the table of the world. Our soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great. If we are full of what the world offers, then perhaps a fast might express, or even increase, our soul’s appetite for God. Between the dangers of self-denial and self-indulgence is the path of pleasant pain called fasting.

John Piper

I don’t have a lot to say today, because I think John Piper said it all!  I’ll just ask some questions:

  • How much time do I spend watching TV?
  • What programs am I watching?  Are they worth the time I take to watch them?
  • How much time do I spend on the computer?
  • Is that time proportionate to the responsibilities I have on the computer?
  • Are there reasonable times I could take “breaks” from the computer?  (weekend, Sunday, from 8-12, from 6pm-8pm, etc)
  • Could I benefit from taking a break from the computer?

Fasting from media can be like fasting from food, it can bring us closer to God and help us hone our focus & maybe re-prioritize.

Have you ever done a media fast?  What was your experience?
