Welcome to the first day of 5 Days of Organizing & Cleaning! I’m participating with over 20 other bloggers to bring you this series and am so excited! I’ll be focusing on 5 Days of Cleaning Your Mind & Body.

Do we need so much stuff?
I have heard others say, and have told myself while shopping: I need this, you need this, we need this!!
Marketers tell us all day long: This is on SALE! You need it! What will you do if you go home without it?
Then tomorrow the marketers and the ads tell us: This is on sale for MORE THAN IT WAS YESTERDAY! Now you must have it!
And I say: Yes! I need it!
Is it time to examine what we really need? In this day and age, we’re seeing a lot of emphasis on sustainable living and “going green”. Fasting and purifying and purging our belongings benefit more than the environment. They benefit our souls.
Why would we want to clean the mind and body?
- to gain perspective.
It’s easy to think we need all kinds of stuff when we’re knee-deep in it. If we set aside a day or week to change our focus we might have a different ability to see what we don’t need.
- to make more room for God
How much time do I spend checking Facebook statuses that I could be spending in prayer or Bible reading, or just listening to worship music?
- to evaluate our priorities
What am I spending my time on? Too often I’m spending it on things that aren’t worthwhile. I’ve been known to watch silly reruns on TV until late at night and then I’ve been tired and grumpy the next morning when my kids wake up.
- to practice self-discipline (my least favorite)
Who wants to practice self-discipline? Not me! But the Bible is clear that our body is to answer to us, not the other way around.
1 Cor 9:27 I discipline my body and make it my slave , so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
I can say for a fact that my body is NOT my slave. Especially when it comes to cravings. If my body wants it, I eat it. (Pregnant or not!)
1 Cor 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.
Can I really say nothing has mastered me? When I look at my life and how I spend my time, what things are gaining hold over me that aren’t beneficial?
…for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17
This week we’ll look at cleaning our minds through different avenues as well as talk about cleaning our bodies of the different foods we eat.
1. cleaning the body through detoxing
2. cleaning the body through fasting (involving food)
3. making more time to focus on God (through purging our homes, examining our schedules, etc.)
4. cleaning our minds by fasting from different types of media
