{Day 2} Cleansing The Body Through Detoxing

A few months ago I started a full body detox with a group of readers.  {You know who you are}!  I was feeling unmotivated, gluttonous, frustrated with my eating, and generally frumpy.

I started the detox just as an incentive to lose weight.  What I noticed is that controlling your food intake is hard, but feels soooo good.  All of us commented on how “clean” we felt and how we had more energy.  To be honest, it just feels good to have some self-control.

Why does it feel good to have self control?  Why doesn’t it feel just as good when I’m eating whatever I want?  I think because instant gratification is never as good as it initially feels, and always has consequences.

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.  Proverbs 25:28

That is such an awful picture.  ...a city that was broken into…does that mean that my body has been broken into when I’ve been eating garbage and lots of it?  …left without walls…what else is going to happen to me now that I have no walls to protect myself?  Maybe this is where disease and poor health will start hitting me harder.

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.  Hebrews 12:11

In college I made my first attempt at team sports since two rather embarrassing years playing soccer in elementary school.  (The highlight of every soccer game was when the coach pulled me out, and at the end when we got snacks.  I’m all about sports.)

I went out for the rowing team in the middle of the year and came in during “double days”.  Two grueling 3 hour practices a day with girls that had already been doing these workouts for four months.  Yikes.  I thought I would die.  Double days lasted for two weeks and then we moved to our regular 6 am practices once daily.  During those two weeks I was so sore I could hardly move.  I went to bed at 8pm.  And I shocked myself every time I made it through a practice.

By the end, the pain of being disciplined was met with the ability to row well for the team.  We got in our boats and determinedly (but peacefully) raced knowing that we were bearing the fruit of our labors.

Do not love the world or anything in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man (woman), the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he does – comes not from the Father but from the world. I John 2:15

My cravings are not from the Father, unless I’m craving Him.  This verse gives a great reason for working toward having self control when it comes to what we eat.

There are many options besides detoxing and dieting that will help cleanse your body and help regain self control, but I think that detoxing especially could be a great jump-start.  You will find links below to the articles I wrote on the detox and printables that will help you with planning.  I found it especially helpful to have a group of like-minded women doing the detox with me.  We formed a “secret” Facebook group and are even now actively encouraging others on our weight loss journeys.

Another resource that my detox group has used is Lisa Terkeurst’s book Made to Crave She is great at helping us see that we are made to crave, but it’s God, not food we are meant for (or other worldly things).
