Fun Project: Embellish Tote Bags

Earlier this summer I was on the Raising Homemakers Wednesday link-up and I found this super cute idea for making a plain ole’ tote bag look prettier.  It was a post called “Dollar Store Chic” on Desiring Virtue.  Head over there for specific directions.

I thought it was the perfect gift for my two nieces.  Their birthday was in June.  So I bought some tote bags.  And last week we actually made the bags.

I think they say, “better late than never?”
Start with a plain tote bag.  I found these at the Dollar Store.

Measure your complementary fabric 1/2″ bigger than the panel on both sides.  Cut.

Fold oversized ends over and iron, pin fabric panel to bag.

Keep the little ones busy.

Sew the panel on.  Repeat with back side.

Try not to sew the back of the bag to the front (that might have been me).

Engage seam ripper if necessary.

Don’t let the baby go in the street.

(We were working in the garage to allow ample play space for the six other kids that happened to be around.)

Add bling.

Voila!

Beautifully done!
