Have A Dinner Picnic!

I don’t know about you, but my husband works.  Someone has to bring in the money around here.  His work schedule has him getting home between 6 and 7 most days.  That means he misses out on almost every day of fun.  He gets home in time to eat dinner and help put the kids to bed.  It’s no good.

So I had this little brainstorm a few weeks ago.  It’s summer!  Kids don’t have to get to bed by eight!  We don’t have to eat dinner at home every night!  What if I had a picnic ready when Charlie walks in the door and we all head out to the great unknown?

Some of tonight’s picnic fare:  cantaloupe, left-over corn on the cob, chocolate chip cookies.

(I didn’t really want peanut butter and jelly, so I picked up some of Trader Joe’s pulled pork for sandwiches.  Next week I’ll plan better and maybe make it myself, but this was yummy and fast.)

We’ve been having Dinner Picnics now at least once a week.  And it’s great.  We’re fortunate that we live near the beach, and we’re kind of beach addicts, so mostly we go there.  Sometimes we vary it and we go to the dunes, where the baby enjoys eating sand.  Tonight it was the pier so the boys could fish.

It’s great to have found a way to extend Fun Summer to evenings with Dad!  Where do you enjoy going for simple fun in the summer?

  1. I LOVE the dinner picnic idea! That’s great way to keep summer fun and get dad in on the fun. Perhaps we will have to try sometime…

  2. That’s a great idea. Ken works from home, just started in the fall. He met us at the pool this afternoon, which it super fun.

    • Pools and summer are like peas and carrots. It’s not terribly hot around here, but we angle for the pool every chance we get anyway.

  3. Loved your idea (and the loving heart behind it!) and those cookies made me hungry! Thank you also for stopping by my blog and for your kind comments; I appreciate it!
